Credit-card travel insurance vs a Russia medical policy
A card that works at home is not a policy that pays in Russia. Bundled “travel insurance” on Visa, Mastercard or American Express almost never replaces a Russia travel medical contract.
| Question | Card programme | Russia travel medical policy |
|---|---|---|
| Pays a Moscow hospital? | Almost never. Domestic networks and many US/UK/EU banks block RU acquiring. | Yes, if the wording names Russia and the event is covered. |
| Satisfies a consulate EUR 30,000 certificate? | Rarely. A card booklet is not an insurance certificate. | The insurer issues the document you show, if required. |
| Medical evacuation / repatriation | Only if the card programme says so in writing for Russia. | Core of a travel medical policy when the limit includes it. |
| Works if you travel against official advice? | Often excluded. | Read the exclusion. Advisory language is not automatic cover. |
| Already in Russia | Card benefits rarely start mid-trip. | Must be declared. Some wordings apply a waiting period or refuse. |
| Sport, pregnancy, pre-existing conditions | Usually excluded unless you bought a rider years ago. | Declared before you pay; undeclared sport is a frequent denial. |
| Who you call at 03:00 | The bank’s travel desk, if it still answers for Russia. | The assistance number printed on the policy PDF. |
