How to get travel insurance for Russia in 2026

Travellers still type “insurance for Russia” and “Russian insurance” as if they were one product. They are not. In 2026 you still separate official entry rules from a commercial travel medical policy. The wording you accept at checkout is the contract.

1. Check whether you need insurance to enter Russia

There is no single yes/no for every passport. Consulates, e-visa conditions and visa-free regimes differ by nationality, purpose and length of stay. A visa stamp does not prove a claim will be paid.

Start with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs tables and the official e-visa portal, then your own embassy or FCDO-style travel advice. Country of residence does not replace citizenship.

If a consulate asks for EUR 30,000 medical cover, that is an entry document test — not a promise that every illness is insured. Read the wording, not a slogan on a booking site.

2. Decide what the policy must actually do

A useful Russia trip policy is travel medical insurance: emergency treatment, medical transport and repatriation. It is not a substitute for a visa invitation letter from iVisa, and it is not a migration registration document.

Typical extras to check in 2026: already-in-Russia start dates, winter sport, mountain hiking, pregnancy, age limits, COVID wording, dental emergencies, and whether the assistance number works from a Russian SIM.

Credit-card “travel insurance” is rarely enough. Geographic exclusions, activation rules and Russia-specific wording often fail at the consulate or at a hospital desk.

3. Match dates, passport names and activities

Cover should include the arrival and departure days. For a multi-entry visa, the policy still follows the trip you declared — not the visa validity printed in the passport.

Names and passport numbers must match the travel document exactly. Latin letters only, as in the machine-readable zone. Errors here delay both visa files and claims.

Declare skiing, snowboarding or other high-risk sport before you pay. Undeclared sport is a common exclusion, not a footnote.

4. Pay with an international card — off this site

Foreign Visa and Mastercard still fail at many Russian tills. A hosted checkout that accepts an international card is the practical route for travellers buying cover before they fly.

Never type a card number into a brochure site. On Insurance4Russia, card data belongs only on the payment provider’s hosted page. Until LIVE sales are enabled, checkout here is synthetic.

Keep the confirmation email and a PDF you can open offline. A hospital or border officer will not wait while you hunt through a login wall.

5. After you buy: assistance is not the same as order support

Order support at Support@ivisa.ru can find a policy number. It cannot authorise treatment. Emergency contacts appear on the issued policy only.

If you change dates, add a traveller or need a refund, that is an insurer process — not an automatic chargeback. Demo refunds on this site do not move money.

If you are already in Russia, say so before purchase. Some wordings will not start mid-trip or will apply a waiting period.

2026 checklist before you fly

Passport names match the policy. Dates include arrival and departure. Cover limit meets any consulate figure you were given. Sport is declared. You have an English PDF plus the assistance number stored offline.
