1. A Moscow till is not a hosted checkout

Many Russian shops, taxis and clinics still cannot take a foreign Visa or Mastercard. That is a local acquiring problem. It does not automatically mean you cannot pay an overseas insurance merchant that your bank already allows.

If a consulate or hospital later asks how you paid, the merchant name on the statement should match the insurer or platform named on the policy, not a random travel agency.

2. Which cards and wallets to expect

Acceptance depends on the payment partner, your issuing bank and the card country — never on a slogan. Some international Visa and Mastercard cards work; some corporate, prepaid or geo-blocked cards do not.

Apple Pay and Google Pay only work if the underlying card is already accepted and the wallet is enabled for that merchant. Do not assume a phone wallet bypasses a bank’s Russia-related rule.

3-D Secure / bank approval is normal. A timeout or a declined 3DS challenge is not proof that insurance is unavailable. Try another card from the same household only if the policy wording allows a different payer.

3. What to do if the charge fails

Do not retry blindly. Check the bank SMS, available balance and whether the merchant country is blocked. A second attempt on a declined authorisation can look like fraud to the issuer.

Cash in Russia does not replace a pre-trip policy. Buying cover after you land may hit a waiting period or an already-in-Russia exclusion. Say so before you pay.

4. Keep proof you can open offline

Save the confirmation email, the policy PDF and the assistance number. A hospital desk will not wait while you recover a login on roaming data.

A successful card charge is not a visa, not an invitation letter, and not proof that every claim will be paid. Read exclusions for sport, pregnancy and travel against official advice.
