Insurance for Russia from India
Reviewed by Anna Volkova. Last checked 26 Sep 2026. Official entry rules change — confirm the MFA table for your passport.
Indian passports are not visa-free for tourism in Russia. Most short visits use the official e-visa or an ordinary visa. iVisa can issue an invitation when the ordinary visa route requires one — that letter is not insurance.
1. Entry is not insurance
Check the MFA e-visa portal for Indian citizens and the Russian consular section in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Chennai. Country of residence (for example a GCC work visa) does not replace Indian citizenship on the form.
2. What cover to buy
Indian domestic health insurance almost never pays for treatment in Russia. Buy travel medical insurance that names Russia, includes arrival and departure days, and meets any EUR 30,000 figure your consulate printed. If you will ski or trek, declare it. If you are already in Russia, say so — some wordings will not start mid-trip.
3. Paying with an international card
Indian-issued Visa and Mastercard are among the cards we see most often on iVisa checkouts. They still fail at many Russian shops. Pay on the hosted insurance page before you fly. Do not type PAN into a brochure site. Keep the PDF on the phone offline.
4. Frequent mistakes from India
- An e-visa approval is not a claims guarantee.
- Group bookings must list each passport exactly — one wrong Latin spelling blocks the whole file.
- UPI or net-banking inside Russia will not replace a pre-trip policy.
| Topic | Rule of thumb for India |
|---|---|
| Visa-free tourism? | Confirm the current MFA table. Do not trust a blog. |
| Typical consular medical figure | EUR 30,000 appears often — it is an entry document, not a claims guarantee. |
| Home health plan in Russia? | Almost never. Buy a Russia travel medical policy. |
| Indian card at a Moscow till? | Usually fails. Pay the insurer on hosted checkout before you fly. |
Related questions
Is insurance mandatory for every foreign visitor?
There is no single yes/no: entry insurance rules vary by passport, visa type and international agreements—check your nationality, visa and consulate guidance.
Do visa-free visitors need insurance?
Visa‑free entry does not automatically remove insurance expectations—check rules for your citizenship; even without formal obligation, treatment costs are a real financial risk.
What information do I need to buy insurance?
You usually need the traveller’s identity and trip details (citizenship, residence, travel dates and age); passport data is requested only when the insurer requires it.
I was charged but have no policy — what should I do?
Keep the order number and payment details and ask the seller to verify if the charge was an authorization, capture, or failed issuance. Do not pay again until the seller confirms the transaction status.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Pre‑existing and chronic conditions vary by insurer — get a written confirmation for your specific diagnosis about exacerbations, life‑threatening cover or exclusions before buying.
Can I change my travel dates after purchase?
You can usually change dates only if the insurer permits it and coverage hasn’t begun; request reissue and get official confirmation before the new dates.
