Insurance for Russia from the United States
Reviewed by Anna Volkova. Last checked 26 Sep 2026. Official entry rules change — confirm the MFA table for your passport.
US citizens are not visa-free for tourism in Russia. Many use the official unified e-visa or an ordinary visa with an invitation. A visa stamp is not proof that a later medical claim will be paid.
1. Entry is not insurance
Start with the Russian MFA e-visa portal and the consular section that matches your residence — not a booking slogan. If you already hold a multi-entry visa, the policy still follows the trip dates you declared, not the visa validity printed in the passport.
2. What cover to buy
US domestic health plans and many US travel policies exclude Russia or travel against official advice. A Russia-trip policy is travel medical insurance: emergency treatment, medical transport and repatriation. Consulates often ask for a EUR 30,000 medical document — that is an entry test, not a promise that every illness is covered. Declare sport, pregnancy and already-in-Russia starts before you pay.
3. Paying with an international card
US-issued Visa and Mastercard usually fail at Russian tills, taxis and clinics. Pay the insurer on a hosted international checkout before you fly. Apple Pay only works if the underlying US card is accepted by that merchant. Keep the English PDF and assistance number offline — a hospital desk will not wait for roaming data.
4. Frequent mistakes from United States
- Credit-card ‘travel insurance’ bundled with a US card rarely satisfies a consulate or a Moscow hospital.
- Some US policies void cover if you travel against a State Department advisory — read the wording, then buy a Russia-specific medical policy if needed.
- Names must match the passport MRZ. Middle names dropped on a US ticket but present in the passport delay both visas and claims.
| Topic | Rule of thumb for United States |
|---|---|
| Visa-free tourism? | Confirm the current MFA table. Do not trust a blog. |
| Typical consular medical figure | EUR 30,000 appears often — it is an entry document, not a claims guarantee. |
| Home health plan in Russia? | Almost never. Buy a Russia travel medical policy. |
| US card at a Moscow till? | Usually fails. Pay the insurer on hosted checkout before you fly. |
Related questions
Is insurance mandatory for every foreign visitor?
There is no single yes/no: entry insurance rules vary by passport, visa type and international agreements—check your nationality, visa and consulate guidance.
Do visa-free visitors need insurance?
Visa‑free entry does not automatically remove insurance expectations—check rules for your citizenship; even without formal obligation, treatment costs are a real financial risk.
Is EUR 30,000 always the required minimum?
No — €30,000 appears in some consular rules but is not universal; always confirm the required amount and currency with your consulate and in the policy.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Pre‑existing and chronic conditions vary by insurer — get a written confirmation for your specific diagnosis about exacerbations, life‑threatening cover or exclusions before buying.
I was charged but have no policy — what should I do?
Keep the order number and payment details and ask the seller to verify if the charge was an authorization, capture, or failed issuance. Do not pay again until the seller confirms the transaction status.
What information do I need to buy insurance?
You usually need the traveller’s identity and trip details (citizenship, residence, travel dates and age); passport data is requested only when the insurer requires it.
